Het beste van 2020: De Hugo Awards 2020 - lees je mee?

In normale tijden worden de winnaars van de Hugo Awards bekendgemaakt op de 'Con' (World Science Fiction Convention) van het jaar. Helaas is CoNZealand - de 78e editie zou zich in Nieuw-Zeeland afspelen - geannuleerd vanwege de pandemie. Het programma is volledig omgevormd tot een online gebeurtenis, met op 1 augustus de Hugo ceremonie. Jammer, maar begrijpelijk en noodzakelijk in deze moeilijke omstandigheden. Als ondersteunend of bezoekend lid van de Con ontvang je een digitaal voter's package met de shortlists, zodat je alle nominaties kunt lezen en kunt stemmen op je favoriet.

Opvallend is dat de shortlist volledig wordt bemand door vrouwelijke auteurs dit jaar! Met de vriendelijke groeten aan de sad puppies. De shortlist bestaat uit drie sciencefictionromans en drie fantasytitels (niet met opzet) en drie van de zes zijn debuten. De Hugo Awards bevatten nog veel meer categorieën, zoals 'Best Novella', 'Best Novellette', 'Best Short Story' en fan-, magazine-, film-, beeld- en redacteurscategorieën. Als we voldoende tijd hebben, komt er wellicht ook nog wel een novella (korter dan een roman), novelette (nog korter) of short story (nóg korter) langs.

Martijn en Debbie hebben een 'supporting membership', maar uiteraard ook alle zes boeken van de shortlist in huis. Zij hebben het plan opgevat om samen de shortlist door te akkeren, hun ervaringen op Hebban vast te leggen en hun uiteindelijke stem te geven voor de Hugo Awards. Er is tot eind juli tijd om te lezen. En jij kunt meedoen!

Zo werkt het

1. We gaan de zes boeken in de shortlistcategorie 'Best Novel' lezen. Je vindt ze hieronder. Geen van deze titels is vertaald helaas (maar wat niet is, kan nog komen).
2. We gaan tijdens, na en tussendoor het lezen onze ervaringen onder dit artikel delen. Uiteindelijk volgt er na elk gelezen boek een recensie en laten we ook weten wat volgens ons de winnaar zou moeten zijn. Misschien gaan we het wel helemaal niet met elkaar eens zijn ...
3. We plaatsen geen zware spoilers, maar je krijgt natuurlijk wel íets van het verhaal mee als je onze opmerkingen leest.
4. Heb jij een van deze of alle boeken in huis of heb je ook zo'n voter's package, dan kun je aanhaken. Dat kun je doen door onder dit artikel mee te praten. Heb je maar één boek in huis of wil je alleen de boeken meelezen die je interessant vindt, dan laat je alleen weten wat je vindt van die titels. Je hoeft ze niet alle zes te lezen.

Debbie: 'Anders is een interessante auteur en iemand die ook als organisator, redacteur en lezer heel erg actief is in het veld. Haar vorige roman All the birds in the sky werd voor zo'n beetje alle prijzen genomineerd, maar won er uiteindelijk geen.'

Martijn: 'Echt een gave - zij het old skool - setting, ben heel benieuwd wat Anders (die ik al volg sinds ze nog bij het door haar opgerichte io9 werkte) daar van maakt.'

Gideon the Ninth van Tamsyn Muir

Debbie: 'Die flaptekst, die cover! Dit debuut maakte wel golfslag toen het verscheen. Ik vind het begin nog wat cliché en saai, maar misschien was ik er nog niet klaar voor.'

Martijn: 'De omschrijving belooft een bizar, humorrijk actieverhaal met ongewone personages en omstandigheden.'

Debbie: 'Hurley is een auteur die niet binnen vakjes te categoriseren is en dat vind ik boeiend. De verhaalbeschrijving van dit boek is bizar en geweldig. Een echte scienfefictionroman.'

Martijn: 'Militaire scifi, getraumatiseerde soldaten, geheimen en 'combat madness', dat klinkt als precies iets voor mij.'

A Memory Called Empire van Arkady Martine

Debbie: 'Dit is de onverwachte titel. Een debuut van een verder nog onbekende auteur. De geluiden over deze roman zijn erg goed, maar ik heb geen idee wat we kunnen verwachten.'

Martijn: 'Interessante en spannende beschrijving, die een beetje aan Iain Banks' Culture doet denken. Color me intrigued.'

Debbie: 'McGuire schrijft geweldig. Heel toegankelijk, origineel, soepel, verrassend. Ze gaat lekker out of the box met ideeën.'

Martijn: 'Vanaf de Twins-serie van Weiss en Hickman (waarin zwarte magiër Raistlin de duistere godin wil vervangen) heb ik een zwak voor verhalen over streven naar godhood... en laten er nou ook nog tweelingen in zitten.'

Debbie: 'Het derde debuut in deze shortlist. Prachtige cover, intrigerend plot. Ik denk dat deze het meest de mainstream lezer zou aanspreken. Lezers die niet per sé van scifi of fantasy houden.'

Martijn: 'Verhalen in verhalen vind ik vaak interessant, zeker als ze invloed op elkaar krijgen. Prachtige cover ook.'
