Greeks Bearing Gifts

Misdaadauteur Philip Kerr, bekend van de Bernie Gunter-reeks, overleed eerder in maart van dit jaar. In april verschijnt nog wel deze dertiende Gunter-detective en in 2019 staat zelfs nog een veertiende titel gepland: Metropolis. Wellicht heeft Kerr, die aan kanker leed, zijn afgeronde manuscripten ingeleverd voor zijn overlijden. Bernie-fans zullen deze laatste delen met een gevoel van melancholie lezen.

In 2012 debuteerde thrillerauteur Malerman met Bird Box, in 2015 vertaald als De kooi. Ondanks het destijds door onze thrillerredacteur Soraya gegeven predikaat 'een van de meest huiveringwekkende thrillers van 2015', is opvolger Black Mad Wheel nooit vertaald en zijn er ook van het nieuwe Unbury Carol geen vertaalplannen bekend. Booklist prijst het boek: 'Breathtaking and menacing . . . an intricately plotted, lyrical page-turner about love, betrayal, revenge, and the primal fear of being buried alive.'

De eerder onder pseudoniem schrijvende Catherine Webb (jeugdfantasy) en Kate Griffin (urban fantasy) schrijft nu al een tijdje onder haar eigen naam Claire North bijzondere romans. Altijd net een tikje anders dan 'normaal'. De eerste twee romans onder haar eigen naam zijn vertaald, maar de derde en vierde niet en ook voor 84k is nog geen vertaling aangekondigd. Literatuurredacteur Daphne noemde De eerste vijftien levens van Harry August 'buitengewoon overtuigend'. En ondanks wat kritiek op de gewone schrijfstijl is ook recensent Anne enthousiast over Norths latere roman Huid op huid: 'Desondanks is Huid op huid door het oprekken van het thrillergenre een verfrissende aanwinst.' The Bookbag noemt 84K: 'An astounding thought provoking and powerful book. Be warned, it will tie you up in knots with every twist and turn of the page and make you question everything.'
