The Dragonbone Chair is het eerste deel van de epische fantasyserie Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, in het Nederlands verschenen als Heugenis, Smart en het Sterrenzwaard. De auteur is momenteel bezig met een vervolgserie. Opvallend aangezien de oorspronkelijke serie bijna dertig jaar oud is. Met het overbruggingsboek The Heart of What was Lost brengt Williams je van de oude serie naar de nieuwe, Last King of Osten Ard, waarvan het eerste deel, The Witchwood Crown, inmiddels is verschenen. Voor nieuwe lezers ligt er een keuze: starten bij het allereerste boek, The Dragonbone Chair, of meegaan op de nieuwe golf met The Witchwood Crown.

Hier kan ook het volledige oeuvre van Neil Gaiman staan, want de beste man is briljant. Zijn American Gods-boeken maken momenteel indruk in de vorm van een TV-serie en hebben dankzij dit nieuwe succes wellicht ook weer meer en nieuwe lezers gevonden. Stardust is een bijna twintig jaar geleden verschenen standalone over het saaie dorpje Wall, een jonge, naieve Tristran en een ster die uit de hemel valt. Het boek is magisch verfilmd met een geniale rol van Robert DeNiro.

A Wizard of Earthsea – Ursula K. Le Guin

The grand old lady van de sciencefiction en fantasy is Ursula Le Guin. Haar bekendste pennevrucht is de wereldberoemde Earthsea-serie, waarvan A Wizard of Earthsea het eerste deel is. Een prachtige, ouderwets epische en toch nooit gedateerde boekenreeks.

Maar liefst veertien dikke delen telt de Wheel of Time-reeks van Robert Jordan. De laatste drie delen zou hij niet meer zelf schrijven. Jordan moest zijn meerdere erkennen in een slopende ziekte en bereidde zijn opvolger voor. Brandon Sanderson heeft met alle respect en grote kunde de laatste drie delen geschreven, Jordans notities nauwkeurig volgend en onder het toezicht van diens weduwe. The Eye of the World is het eerste deel, een spannende introductie in een gevaarlijke wereld, waar drie boerenjongens een avontuur aangaan dat ze alle hoeken van de wereld zal tonen.

Terry Goodkind heeft een enorm aantal fans, maar zijn prekerige stijl heeft ook veel vroege lezers afgeschrikt. Na vijftien delen in de Sword of Truth-serie hield hij het voor bekeken om even later met Death's Mistress een spinoff te creëren.

Eragon – Christopher Paolini

Piepjong was Christopher Paolini toen zijn debuut Eragon werd gepubliceerd. Op zijn vijftiende al begon hij te schrijven aan het verhaal rond boerenjongen (altijd weer die boerenjongens) en zijn draak Saphira. Het zou hem tien jaar kosten om de vier delen af te schrijven. Na het laatste deel, dat in 2011 gepubliceerd werd, is er niet veel meer te melden geweest rond Paolini. Maar de Eragon-reeks blijft voor jong en oud de moeite waard.
NL: Dit boek is in het Nederlands makkelijk te vinden. Het heet ook Eragon.

Het eerste deel in de Ranger's Apprentice-serie, een serie die buitengewoon geschikt is om jonge, onwillige lezers te verleiden toch een boek op te pakken. Spannend en avontuurlijk, goed geschreven en ook voor volwassen lezers die zin hebben in een snel tussendoortje prima geschikt.
NL: De Grijze Jager-serie start in het Nederlands met De Ruïnes van Gorlan.

An Ember in the Ashes is een buitengewoon geslaagde start van een Young Adult fantasyserie. Het boek bevat de nodige clichés en tropes, maar benut ze goed en is eenvoudigweg een heel fijn stuk lezen. Het tweede deel is inmiddels ook verschenen als A Torch Against the Night en het derde deel wordt in 2018 verwacht.
NL: Het eerste deel van de Vuur en As-serie heet De heerschappij van de maskers.
The Sword of Shannara – Terry Brooks

Wellicht herkennen jongere lezers de naam Shannara eerder van de gelijknamige TV-serie The Shannara Chronicles. Het eerste deel van deze enorme fantasyserie vol subseries, afsplitsingen en vervolgen is immers veertig jaar oud. Auteur Terry Brooks heeft amper iets anders geschreven dan Shannara-boeken in een tempo van ongeveer een boek per jaar. Wil je zeker weten dat je nog lang genoeg hebt om te lezen, dan is The Sword of Shannara voor jou het juiste boek.
