Letters to my Father is a visual diary and the first monograph of the Iraqi artist Salam Atta Sabri reflecting on his life and his homeland. Like a stream of consciousness, the images flow into a story. They are a personal testimony of an artist who recalls his life through the use of images, notes and names of cities. His art is influenced by war, revolutions and frequent political changes and the memories of his father, acclaimed artist Atta Sabri. His work deals directly with the experience of returning to a country so changed by conflict. Despite working in the arts all of his life he kept his own work of draughtsmanship out of the public eye until he participated in the Ruya Foundation's exhibition Invisible Beauty, the National Pavilion of Iraq at the 56th Venice Biennale.
