No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint Gilbert Entre les Loups, deep in the wilderness of Quebec. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world famous for their glorius voices, raised in anvient chants whose effect is so profound it is known as "the beautiful mystery". But when the choir director is murdered, Chief Inspector Gamache and Beauvoir of the Sûreté de Quebec are called to the monastery, where they discover fiscord in the apparent harmony.
