Robert kincaid is a photographer for the National Geographic. One day he is sent to rural Iowa to do a report on the peculiar bridges of Madison County. He meets Francesca Johnson, who is unhappily married to a cattle farmer. As soons as they set eyes on each other, they feel strongly attracted to one another. While Francesca's husband and her children are spending the week elsewhere, she and Robert Kincaid hav a passionate love affair. They discuss plans to run away, but although it will break her heart, Francesca cannot do this. She wants to remain loyal to her husband and children. Kincaid leaves the morning of the day. Richard and the children come back home and Francesca lives with the memories of those few days for the rest of her life.
