The song of achilles
I myself enjoy reading books of Greek mythology, so I took a shot. One of the most famous stories from Iliad is also most tragic.
This time, it is told through the eyes of Patroclus. Usually, hero stories are told by the hero himself. It gives a different twist that someone from sidelines tells it.
We start when he is very young. Due to an accident, Patroclus is exiled. There, he meets Prince Achilles. With time, they become close friends. Together with Chiron, they train in medicine but also fight. We see their friendship grow stronger and stronger.
Achilles is given a choice. A short life of fame or a long life. Achilles chooses the short life. Which would you choose?
When Achilles is summoned, Patroclus goes with him.
Through the story, you see the growth in both characters. Their friendship builds very nicely, as do their feelings. This is a friends to lovers trope. You follow them both from very young to adulthood. The only thing I missed here was the transition from Achilles to the famous warrior. That transition did happen very quickly after Chiron.
This is a book I could not put down. A beautiful retelling of Iliad. I definitely recommend this to Greek mythology lovers, especially those who like trope of friends to lovers, curious readers who want to know more about Achilles and Patroclus.
