Far from an average novel

AvdP85 (André) 30 januari 2025
British author and screenwriter Matthew Blake's novel ‘Anna O’ became an instant bestseller, being published in 41 territories, and being developed to the screen. Chosen as the Book of the Month on Hebban and most talked about thriller in 2024 globally.

Benedict Prince (Ben) gets a call from Bloom, without telling why he has to come without delay to the Abbey in London. The Abbey is a special treatment centre for people having problems with sleep. On arrival Ben meets a high placed person, and gets to hear that he gets a special assignment to awaken Anna O. This assignment has great risks for all involved, but also there is more to it than just trying to wake-up Anna. Something happened on a day that made Anna sleep for four years without waking, and there is a link with an old similar case. Ben takes risks to solve the mystery surrounding Anna while finding a clue how to wake her up.

Matthew Blake slowly unravels the plot, letting new characters appear that seem to know more, and making you doubt about the case. Is it really in the best interest of public peace to wake Anna O? Or maybe there is a hidden agenda? Blake does that well, making you doubt about Clara, Lola, Harriet and X, but never revealing too much so you can point out who is guilty. Blake divided the story in five parts, each with short chapters, and switching between Ben, Bloom, Clara, Emily, Lola, X and Anna’s Notebook. This gives a nice variety in the story, while making clear each their view on the case.

The first few pages made it feel like an average suspense story, a call and getting a case, but that was a mistake. Reading further it became clear this is far from an average novel with much more going on than just ‘finding the murderer of a crime’. As soon as some characters come into play, while the notebook is revealed, it becomes a true crime mystery. Making it hard to stop reading once getting started. Reading right before sleep is not a good idea.
