A binge-worthy and captivating YA thriller
4.5 ☆
"Life has this way of making us grow and change, whether we want to or not."
This book reminded me why I should read YA thrillers more often—it was so addictive, I couldn’t put it down and finished it in two evenings.
The story is about Holly, a 16-year-old student who secretly runs the Instagram account called "Anonymously Yours", where her classmates can anonymously share their deepest secrets and confessions. When she suddenly receives a shocking and traumatic confession, she is determined to unravel the truth. But to solve the mystery, she has to reveal her identity. Therefore Holly must forge new friendships and repair old ones, while confronting obstacles that challenge her strength. Will her revealed identity bring her closer to her friends or will they drive her deeper into isolation?
The author immediatly got me hooked by sharing a suspenseful flashforward. The writing style is fast-paced and simple, which made it easy to follow. I loved the references to modern shows like The Traitors and Wednesday, along with the HUGE amount of high school drama, which made me glad that these days are far behind me.
I liked Holly as a main character because she was kind of relatable as a fellow booklover and introvert. I have to admit, there were times when she kind of annoyed me. I'm not entirely sure why, but maybe it's on me because she sometimes behaved like a typical teenager, and I'm almost 28. Also, she posted a confession about a friend, sharing details only she would know, and I thought, why would you do that if you don't want your identity to be revealed!? Despite that, I loved her character development. It was admireable how she stood up for another student and wouldn't let anything get in the way of seeking justice. Besides Holly, the book also introduces great side characters like Mona and Johannes, and I especially related to Johannes' reveal about his perfectionism and anxiety.
Overall, it was an incredibly binge-worthy and captivating story that got me hooked with it's drama and mystery. It definitely gave off Pretty Little Liars x A Good Girl's Guide to Murder vibes. Plus, it had a bit of a modern, online Lady Whistledown feel—except in this case, Holly takes the role of Lady Whistledown, and it’s all about college students instead of the ton. I’m giving this book 4.5 stars because I managed to predict the big plot twist at the end. It would have earned a full 5 stars if the twist had been a bit more surprising.
Tropes:
- Double life
- Secrets exposed
- Best friends to strangers
