Lezersrecensie
A love story spanning ages
The book tells the story of the families Herckenrath and Fremery. Leon Herckenrath falls in love with the slave Juliette. The story follows this love story and their oldest daughter and her Dutch husband in California, ending with her descendants. The book spans two centuries.
Annejet, the writer, has done her research. She combines this in a story sweeping two centuries, two countries and several historical turning points in American history. It’s more and historical non-fiction book, than an historical fiction book. I didn’t mind that their wasn’t a lot of melodrama in the story, the emotions of the characters were still clear enough to me. It’s an remarkable story. You’ll see a lot of historical events and how the different family members interacted with them.
I listened to the Dutch audiobook.
