Lezersrecensie
A gripping and apart toring story where no one is right or wrong
A story told in two timelines, one taking place in 1944, the other in 1953. In 1944 in Paris a woman in desperation gives her baby to a strange man, just before she’s deported to Auschwitz. Santa Cruz, 1953, Jean-Luc and his wife Charlotte seemingly live the American dream with their young son Sam. Then all of a sudden the past knocks on their door. The story is told through the eyes of Jean-Luc, Charlotte, Sarah and Sam.
The story was gripping and tore me apart at times. Decisions made on the spot can have far reaching consequences, and sometimes it’s impossible to do the right thing. The feelings and thoughts of all the characters are well written and worked out, the writer goes in dept to work out the story. None of the characters are really wrong or right, they make the best choices during a war and from their perspective on the situation. The ending is a feelgood ending.
I read the Dutch translation of the book.
