Create from life
Chuck Palahniuk, born 21 February 1962, is a satire writer and freelance journalist, with Ukrainian ancestry. He is probably most known for his book Fight Club, that was put on film by director David Fincher. Besides that he wrote multiple other books.
In the book he relates his experiences in the book world. Which entails lots of different unusual stories, because he often writes about anti-consumer themes. The information density in this book is really high, which is why it took me a long time to finish. Things need to settle down for me and sink in.
He writes in what he calls a minimalistic approach and usually offers odd theories and opinions about all kinds of topics. These opinions he often experiences in for instance an appearance in public. With this book he seems to say to his fellow writers: Observe life, study it, learn from it. And by doing so your stories will come to you.
As a new writer I would encourage new (and existing) writers to read this book. I am sure I will reread this book multiple times, and each time come away with something new I learned (or picked up that time).
