Lessons in chemistry

Hanne Puype 06 december 2024
The main character of Lessons in chemistry, Elizabeth, is a scientist. But importantly, especially in the 1960s (now still, but that's another conversation), she is a female scientist. She is not taken seriously by her all male colleagues, but despite this, still pushes through. The moment she gets into a relationship with another, male scientist, everyone assumes she is just stealing his work. All the while, Elizabeth tries to break the societal norms in the 60s and stronlgy believes that all women should be treated the same way as men, as well as all people of color should be treated the same way as white people. This is revolutionary at that time and thus Elizabeth feels alone and misunderstood a lot of the time.

Then some heratbreaking things happen and Elizabeth is fired from her job as a chemist. She starts hosting a cooking show, but it is much more than that. While she is broadcasted, she gives advices to other women, teaches them chemistry and inspires them to get more out of their lives and break with societal norms. Housewives are not just housewives, they are way more than that! Meanwhile, Elizabeth heals and builds her chosen family.

Overall, I really enjoyed Lessons in chemistry. It's funny, heartbraking, it makes you angry, there is sciency stuff, and the intricate plot nicely comes together at the end.
