Lezersrecensie
Vreemd laatst boek van Cormac McCarthy
The last chapter raised my rating from 3 to 4* as it was so full of beautiful musings on what living, life and especially sorrow mean at the end of one’s life. This last novel of Cormac McCarthy did otherwise not make any sense to me. No coherent story developed while he suggested one in the very first pages of the book. There is only a constant flow of discussions between characters in mostly rather uninteresting settings about anything at all. The protagonist himself, Bobby Western, is doing nothing substantial. It is suggested his sadness and morbidity are hereditary. The man is indeed a pilar of sadness and regret. I have to admit that the meaning of the novel is a complete mystery to me and that is regretful. Perhaps Cormac McCarthy was intending to write his testament about how he felt about life at his old age for the benefit of his readers. Like I said, I have no idea. I decided not to read Stella Maris.
P.S. Now that I have finished the novel a day ago and let it sink in a bit, I reconsider my rating. I feel that 3* is quite enough.
