"No one is who they seem to be"
You may have heard many things about this book. I have. For me, this is a typical TikTok-book, meaning it's been thrown in my face a million times before I picked it up. The exception being that this is a thriller kind of book, which means it managed to grab my attention, even though I normally let the hyped up books unread for years and years, only picking them up when the hype is over. But... The Bookish Friends community on Whats'App started a bookclub with this book as book of the month and so I just had to join. I fell way behind and all of a sudden I'm ahead because the deadline is Sunday or Monday and here I am, writing my review.
'Murder in the family' has a unique set-up. Something I have never read before. Think true crime television, but in a book. This means there is an unsolved murder and a team hired to go over the case and find new clues and maybe even the murderer in the episodes dedicated to the case. The case is about Luke Ryder and involved are his stepson, Guy Howard, a Journalist, a forensic psychologist and detectives from England and America. These people are leading the episodes along, giving live commentary on the case and going over all the information one more time, to try and figure out what might have happened.
The book is filled with conversation, news paper articles, E-mail exchanges, text messages and Forum Talk about the case and gives out some extra information and thoughts about the case. I will say, there are A LOT of names in the books, which sometimes makes the story a somehwat confusing and hard to follow, not everyone will like the set-up of the book and it really has to be your piece of cake. But I loved it. It wasn't my favorite book, it wasn't the most original story BUT with plenty of twists and turns, the characters that all seem suspicious at some point in the story, and the well put in confusion, extra content besides just the information and the chance to puzzle about in the mystery have given me a very good time. It's also given me a chance to annotate for the very first time and I loved it. The book was easy to read through, even though I might add it comes in handy tot take notes to not get confused, There is no perspective from one side, it's really like watching a true crime documetary.
Like I said, this book has to be your cup of tea, and it certainly was mine. It was interesting, gripping, well put together and I would love to read more of the author and more of these kind of books.
'Murder in the family' receives 4,25 stars from me!
