Gwendy’s laatste avontuur / Gwendy’s final adventure

Dit is het derde en laatste deel uit de Gwendy trilogie van Richard Chizmar en Stephen King. En dit is het summum en in mijn opinie beste deel uit de reeks, alleen al door de vele verwijzingen naar andere boeken uit het gigantische oeuvre van 'The King of Horror' himself.
Gwendy, die reeds al twee keer in contact kwam met Richard Farris en de knoppenkist, krijgt opnieuw bezoek van Farris én krijgt opnieuw de knoppenkist in haar handen. Maar deze keer wordt van haar gevraagd om de kist definitief van de hand te doen.
Nu Gwendy een US senator is geworden, sinds de verkiezingen in 2020, krijgt ze de kans om samen met een ganse crew mee te gaan in de ruimte dankzij de TET Corporatie. Onder de crewleden zit een enthymoloog, een dokter en een rijke weldoener die een mooie prijs betaalde om mee te mogen samen met Gwendy Peterson. Deze multimiljonair, Gareth Winston, is niet onmiddellijk de meest sympathieke peer in de mand maar hij betaalt goed en dus wordt zijn geld graag aanvaard. Al snel voelt Gwendy dat er iets niet klopt aan de man.
Haar reden om in de ruimte mee te gaan is de knoppenkist, die ze met een raket wil afschieten tijdens een ruimtewandeling naar de buitenste regionen van de ruimte waar ze nooit meer terug op Aarde kan terechtkomen, dit op aanvraag van een zieke en oude Richard Farris. Maar Gwendy heeft sinds een aantal jaren last van beginnende Alzheimers en vergeet geregeld alles en het wordt enkel maar erger, dus moet ze haar taak zo snel mogelijk uit kunnen voeren voor het te laat is en ze niet meer weet waarom ze de ruimtereis precies aanging. En niemand mag ervan weten, noch van haar doel, noch van haar ziekte!
Door haar herinneringen komen we ook te weten dat haar man, Ryan, verongelukte in Derry. En dat de behulpzaamheid in Derry niet zo rijkelijk is om deze zaak op te lossen. Daar zouden wel eens bepaalde mannen in gele regenjassen en met opvallende oldtimers kunnen voor tussen zitten. Samen met haar vriendin, Charlotte (het hoofd van de CIA) en ex-sheriff Norris Ridgewick van Castle Rock probeert ze te achterhalen wie verantwoordelijk is voor de dood van haar man, vanuit haar ruimtelijke positie zelfs. De waarheid zou wel eens harder kunnen zijn dan verwacht.
Wie had ooit verwacht dat Stephen King een personage, waarmee we zo hebben meegeleefd en zijn meegegroeid, zelfs in de ruimte zou laten terechtkomen om daar niet alleen tegen zichzelf te moeten vechten (en haar ziekte) maar ook tegen de kwade krachten die de kist willen bemachtigen? En wie had verwacht dat King nog maar eens terug zou keren naar zijn magnum opus, zijn Donkere Toren reeks? En dat niet alleen, ook Pennywise de clown komt geregeld aan bod, al was het maar op de achtergrond want in Derry is nog niet veel veranderd sinds de Loser's Club hem versloegen... Blijkbaar heeft Het toch nog een nieuwe adem gevonden. Wie weet komt daar ooit ook nog een vervolg op?
Het boek zit vol subtiele en heel duidelijke verwijzingen naar verschillende andere boeken uit Kings boeken en dat alleen al maakt het voor een fan van zijn verhalen een plezier om dit boek te lezen. Maar de trilogie in zijn geheel is gewoon een merkbaar sterk staaltje van beide auteurs.
In dit boek zien we opnieuw Kings afkeer voor de (opnieuw) zetelende president Trump en tegelijkertijd krijgen we ook een kritiek en commentaar op toekomstige commerciële ruimtereizen, zoals er onlangs eentje was met zangeres Katy Perry onder andere. (dit boek dateert van 2022, dus toen was het nog theorie, intussen lijkt de mogelijkheid al iets groter dan drie jaar geleden).
Ik raad aan aan elke fan die de boeken van King reeds lazen om er de links naar andere verhalen en personages uit te halen. En intussen geniet ook van deze geweldige trilogie!

After the previous encounters with Richard Farris, who gave Gwendy the Button Box and then took it away again, he is back for a third time but this time he asks a favour of her that will take her to the limits. Gwendy, who is now a US senator will take a flight into space, in a rocket by the TET Corporation (for all you King and Dark Tower fans... rings a bell?), with an entire crew. What that crew doesn't know is she has onsets-Alzheimer's Disease that takes away all her memories one by one. And she has to perform one last task for Farris before she looses her marbles entirely. Joining on the trip into space is also multibillionaire Gareth Winston, whom Gwendy has a real bad feeling about! Whether this feeling is just space fright or a real fear she has to muster, becomes clear during the trip.
Once in space (where no one can hear you scream?) they plan a spacewalk out the Many Flags Space Station, but before Gwendy can get to that her memories of how the Button Box came back into her position and what price it asked for the many tribulations and usages (by her and many others) of the box gain up on her. The death of her husband Ryan, Richard Farris' sick look, the head of CIA who is informed by Gwendy about the box... all those things pop back up in her head while she has to battle an unknown enemy who wants to stop her from doing the one thing she was asked to do by Farris: leave the box in outer space and make sure it never lands back on Earth!
As a finale of this trilogy there is so much going on but mostly this book is another addition to the magnum opus by Stephen King, his Dark Tower series. you wouldn't expect it but there have been little hints before in the previous books, but this time there's no denying it... The box comes from Mid World and is destined to destroy that which holds all universes together... If you thought Roland Deschain was the only one able to stop it... not true!
Besides the obvious Dark Tower links and references, there's also a lot of smaller and not so small links to other novels in King's huge oeuvre. Among those links, there's the obvious Derry and Pennywise, the Clown presence throughout the story. And let me tell you, Pennywise lives! To me, that means we might someday even get a sequel to the novel IT. It's not the first time this has become clear because in other novels, such as Dreamcatcher, there have been a few nods to its everlasting presence in Derry!
For the first time I can remember King added a science fiction element to his stories (maybe The Jaunt is the only other I can think of), where he takes people into space. At the same time, him and Richard, are not shying away from Musks and Bezos, who have recently proven that they plan to take people up in space with their rocketships, that can land safely on Earth again... (we saw Katy Perry and a bunch of women fly up there for about ten minutes)
Again, I feel like this is the best part in the trilogy that concludes the entire story about Gwendy Peterson, the button box that has two little levers (one for chocolates, one for a certain silver coin) and a bunch of coloured buttons (one for each continent, a red one and a black one - the cancer button) and her magic feather! Space was not something I saw her go up to but it works, perfectly even!
Of course, Castle Rock is back (albeit in little flashbacks) and there's Derry. Norris Ridgewick, former sheriff of Castle Rock comes back one more time and there are the little nods I was talking about before... men in yellow slicker coats in cars that look like classic cars but somehow don't feel right (the Low Men, also the Dark Tower and Hearts in Atlantis), there's a small reference to Ed and Lorraine Warren (from Annabelle the doll and The Conjuring stories based on their real cases) and in my opinion there's also Brigette Desjardin (who I think is related to Rita Desjardin, from Carrie)... Try to find as many as you can while reading this book...
