Tell-Tale Lydia

Looneybooks79 08 januari 2025
Annie Doyle disappears. No one knows where she's gone to or if she's even still alive. Her lifestyle (being a prostitute and drug addict) does not bode very well for her and because of that the police isn't very keen on trying to find her. Apart from one officer who thinks he has an idea who's responsible for Annie's missing, no one wants to spend any time on the investigation. So the case soon vanished from everyone's mind, apart from her family's and from those responsible for her death! The only one's knowing are the Fitzimons'... Lydia and Andrew know what happened to Annie and their son Laurence has an idea they might be involved, but he remains silent.

Years go by and Karen Doyle, Annie's sister, is the only one actively trying to find her sister. While she starts a life of her own, she realises there's more to life than her sister's vanishing but she just can't let go. So while starting a modelling career, she keeps on looking for Annie. And then she meets Bridget and her boyfriend Laurence. Between Karen en Laurence a spark ignites. But mother Lydia is very overbearing and very protective of her son...

While the reader always is in the know of what has happened to Annie and is a witness to how the crime is being hidden away, there's a lot of intrigue and lying (no one in this novel is straightforward and every single one in this story has a secret and lies through their teeth) and as a reader you wonder what will happen and if the crime will ever come to the surface!

Nugent's Lying in wait is the Irish version of Poe's Tell-tale Heart, with a bit of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet on top of that. And all of this is mixed into a crime novel by The Irish Queen of Crime! In less than six months, and two books, Liz Nugent has easily become one of my favourite crime authors. Although I liked 'Strange Sally Diamond' just a tad more (because Sally Diamond had more loveable characters) I am very much looking forward to stepping into another one of Nugent's novels!
