Witch, whore… fighter!

Some books find a way into your heart, they look for a little nook in there and nestle themselves in that nook to stay there forever and keep on oozing a certain inky love in your bloodstream. Well, Wayward is one of those books!

This is the story of three women, all of these women live in different ages, different situations and are all from the same family. The only thing they have in common is that their doings with men are sour. They are being dominated, stamped witches or abused by them!

There’s Altha, in 1619, who is aware of what people think of her because she learned from her mother how to heal people and to support men and women where needed (child birth, death, ointments, healing drinks, potions to abort children…). Altha is now on trial for the death of a local man and for witchcraft!

Centuries later, in 1942, Violet is a young girl in her prime who lives in a house with an abusive and distant father who doesn’t love his daughter. But she rebels against him in any way. Until her father has other plans for her leading to Violet’s biggest fear!

In present day Kate is living a life of abuse, guilt and severe trauma. She blames herself for the death of her father and has the most violet abusive husband. But the time has come now to flee her life and start a new one in the Cumbrian cottage she inherited from her great aunt Violet! But will she be safe from him there? Because what her husband doesn’t know is that Kate is pregnant!

This story is gripping and exhilarating from the start and I was immersed in the stories and the connections between the three women throughout the ages, so much so that I just couldn’t and wouldn’t put it down (I lost some sleep over this book, just because I kept reading!)

From the start this book feels like a strong telling about women they try to cage but who break free from the chains that have been put around their ankles.

Another book that shows how women were stamped with a title, witch/whore…, by white men who never wanted to acknowledge the strength of girls and women! Emilia Hart takes this standpoint and turns it against them, in such a great way that the word ‘revenge’ just doesn’t do justice to their actions! I loved it!!!

This was another book that was presented and highly recommended by Sara Cox and her guests in the BBC tv-show ‘Between the Covers’!

The perfect mix between Practical Magic and Sleeping with the Enemy!

Recently this book has been translated in Dutch as well by Uitgeverij Mozaiek. The original cover (that was also used for this Dutch edition) of the Hardback of Emilia Hart’s novel is a true gem and spoke to me. But I bought the paperback that is a lovely pink cover, with a crow on the front, in which a piece of the hardback cover can be seen! And I truly love this edition even more!

For me, this was a get to know novel… I had never heard of Hart before this book but I am sure looking out for more of her in the future! This is another 2024 favourite!
