A celebration of friendship, ambition & the love of the game
«Cleat cute» by Meryl Wilsner is a wonderful sports romance set in the world of professional women’s soccer. Wilsner’s writing style flows effortlessly, making the story accessible & engaging from start to finish. The pacing aligns well with the plot, making each phase of the story develop naturally without feeling rushed.
The chemistry between Grace & Phoebe feels refreshingly authentic. Once their connection starts off, it builds realistically over time & goes through several distinct phases. Following Grace’s development has been extremely rewarding. Her initial keep-away-from-me attitude & strictness are palpable, vibrating off the pages. As she starts hanging out with Phoebe, she not only rediscovers a lighter, younger side of herself but also a part of herself reminding her why she got into soccer in the first place. However, I didn’t quite appreciate her approach to ADHD. Grace, of all people, would never rely on TikTok advice to help someone out - it felt totally out of character, what with her typically grounded nature. Yes, I know we live in the 21st century, but this just felt wrong on so many levels.
The author did an amazing job representing the themes of LGBTQIA+-romance, ambition & friendship, especially within the world of professional women’s soccer. The setting feels realistic & immersive enough that it pulled me into the excitement of game days, the competitive spirit & the bonds between the team mates. It felt like the author captured the energy of the women’s soccer environment perfectly, meaning the dynamic & camaraderie of the locker room, balancing serious discussions with lighthearted moments.
For anyone looking for a sports romance that offers LGBTQIA+-representation & an authentic portrayal of team dynamics, this is a refreshing & rewarding read — so much more than just a story involving romance. It’s a celebration of friendship, ambition & the love of the game.
