The most gripping mystery!
From the very first page, "It Ends at Midnight" had me totally hooked with its chilling opening, making a shiver run down my spine. The dual timeline kept the suspense going, adding a certain mystery to the narrative. It kept me questioning: why these two characters? Why were they telling the story? What’s behind it all? The story kept me guessing. I was completely & utterly blindsided by the various twists & reveals— a piece of brilliant storytelling, if you tell me!
Harriet Tyce’s writing style was perfect. It kept me on edge, in particular because every conversation seemed to be layered with specific undertones, giving the story an authentic & engaging feel. The pacing was flawless & the tension never let up, making it impossible for me to put this book down.
The characters’ dynamics were intriguing, particularly the evolving roles between Sylvie & Tess. Honestly, in the the beginning, the power dynamics weren’t that obvious. By the end, the big reveal felt like I had been punked by the writer - in the most brilliant & satisfying way though!
Sylvie was a character I empathized with deeply. She came across as a hardworking & honest person, which made it especially hard to see her unravel during the chaos of the trial.
The friendship between Sylvie and Tess was fascinating & toxic at the same time - it felt more like frenemies than friends. It's like they don't necessarily like each other, but rather that they're stuck with each other because of how long they have been friends already.
The theme of revenge was explored in such a masterful way — cold, calculated & shocking. I can't even imagine holding a grudge for years, but in this context, the consequences certain past situations brought about were understandable. It certainly showed how a conviction impacts not just the perpetrator but everyone connected to them, adding complexity to the story.
And that ending - WOW. I SIMPLY CANNOT COPE. It was brilliant, original & completely unexpected. The final twist felt like a scam, leaving me screaming internally with “OMG, noooo!” and “wait, what?” moments. It was a whirlwind tying everything together & leaving a very lasting impression on me!
This book is a must-read for anyone who loves a gripping mystery. It hits all the right notes & I cannot recommend it enough. It’s suspenseful, surprising & absolutely unforgettable!
