Lezersrecensie
Een hoofdpersoon in wiens huid je graag zou willen kruipen
(Sorry had deze al geschreven in het Engels en ben op vakantie dus wilde hem niet ook nog eens vertalen).
It was a nice beach read - very on the nose. No need to think. Loved the world and the aesthetics.
Emily has it all: a job teaching / research position at Cambridge, living on campus with her “dog” who is allowed everywhere, a bookcase with ladder, a best friend who is actually super attractive, wants to marry you and is also a fey king. Wouldnt it be nice?!?
Feels like it wasn’t quite finished. A few loose ends (like the warning that Rose gave her, their relationship which was full of potential for interesting development, and the jumping of the cliff thing) and the fact that the fey realm meddled with mortal’s memories was very convenient (not that i wanted to know all the details), nor would adding the forgotten fights and trouble add anything i think.
The worst thing about the novel is that it overemphasizes the academic part. Emily is a Hermoine-esc person. And the writer keeps writing redundant phrases that first show that, and then - just to be sure - also tells it. Also, the way she thinks, the things that should give this book an academic character, are so… obvious or basic. I cant imagine professors - the way they cite or refer to other in-world philosophy of science dilemmas (which was a nice touch in and of itself) is more like a first-year student would debate, not two professors.
