Small town trope, nice to read

Hattie heeft haar geboorteplaats verlaten voor het grotere Charlotte waar ze hard werkt in een evenementenbureau. Maar ze gaat tijdelijk terug om haar ouders te ondersteunen als blijkt dat die een negatief advies hebben gekregen over de kwaliteit van hun grond en ze geen pindaplanten meer kunnen verbouwen. Hattie wil zo snel mogelijk weer weg uit dit kleine stadje, maar de slechte gezondheid van haar vader gooit roet in het eten. Dan wordt ze geconfronteerd met haar ex Leland Lockhardt die haar hart brak toen hij vertrok. Hij is terug en de liefde is niet verloren gegaan. Maar alles is anders nu en er moeten belangrijke keuzes worden gemaakt.

Sing me home to Carolina is een fijne roman met een small-town trope. Het terugkeren naar de geboorteplek en oude liefdes is een bekend gegeven in verhalen, maar wel een hele fijne. Het levert een boek op waar diepgang in te vinden is, en waar personages zich ontwikkelen. Hattie moet gaan nadenken over wie ze is, waar ze staat in het leven en wat ze nu eigenlijk precies wil. Het ophalen van contacten met de bewoners van Mountain view is daar een groot onderdeel van. En dan is er ook nog een mysterieuze nieuwe eigenaar van de hardware store die haar nieuwsgierigheid wekt.

Een small town verhaal kan een groot probleem hebben. In Sing me home to Carolina draait het om de komst van een stadion. Iets wat de kleine stad zou kunnen helpen om te overleven, maar het zal ten koste gaan van alles wat Mountain View nu is. Het verschil in voor en tegenstanders is goed en realistisch uitgewerkt. Het grote geld lijkt de tegenstand te overbluffen met grote consequenties. Het is mooi om te zien dat de bewoners niet opgeven en samen sterk staan.

Sing me home to Carolina is een mooie roman, met fijne personages in een goed uitgewerkte setting en met een goed plot. Het boek zit vol met muziek, wat een extra laag brengt in het verhaal. Een heerlijke roman om te lezen.

Hattie wants to get out of this small town again as soon as possible, but her father's poor health throws a spanner in the works. Then she is confronted by her ex Leland Lockhardt who broke her heart when he left. He is back and love is not lost. But everything is different now and important choices must be made.

Sing me home to Carolina is a beautiful novel with a small-town trope. Returning to her birthplace and refinding an old love is a familiar trope in stories, but a very fine one. It produces a book where there is depth, and where characters develop. Hattie has to start thinking about who she is, where she stands in life and what she wants. Picking up contacts with the residents of Mountain view is a big part of that. And then there's a mysterious new owner of the hardware store who triggers her curiosity.

Mountain View has to deal with a big problem around the plans of a new stadium. Something that could help the small town survive, but it will come at the expense of everything Mountain View is now. The difference in pros and cons is worked out well and realistically. The big money seems to trump the opposition with great consequences. It is nice to see that the residents do not give up and stand strong together.

Sing me home to Carolina is a fine novel, with fine characters in a well-crafted setting and with a good plot. The book is full of music, which brings an extra layer to the story. A delightful novel to read.
