Gossip Girl meets A Good Girl's Guide To Murder
In Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart, we follow Holly. She doesn't have a lot of friends at school, especially since her best friend Mona moved away. When she start an anonymous Instagram account 'Anonymoulsy Yours', she becomes famous overnight without anyone knowing it's her. Through the account, classmates share their biggest secrets. Until one earth shattering secret leads to threats and Holly has to decide if she wants to reveal her identity or not.
I was immediately immersed in Holly's world. Stefanie has a very fluent writing style, which made reading this book super easy. While non-Native English speaking authors sometimes don't deliver great English tellings, I had no issue like this with Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart. Since this also a short book (around 150 pages), it's the perfect bingeread!
This book also keeps you on the edge, especially the action-packed scene near the ending/reveal. I enjoyed the tension-building and the guessing throughout the whole story. There are also some important themes that play a big part in this book, which made this a heartfelt novel as well.
Personally, I'm a fan of recognisable elements in books. This story was very good at including present-day elements. For one, there is the use of Instagram, but we also see WhatsApp and voices messages in the book. References to pop culture like Wednesday and Eleven were also nice to read.
Since this is a short book, the story did feel rushed at times. There wasn't enough time to create depth, which often made me feel less connected to the characters and the overall story. When the perpetrator was revealed, it was a bit anticlimactic because of this lack of getting to know most characters.
Overall, I truly enjoyed this book. While the story could feel a little rushed, the characters that we did get to know were interesing and the premise of the story was intruiging.
