The Housemaid’s Wedding
Disclaimer: there are spoilers for both this book and book 3 in this review!
-
I listened to the audiobook of this book and that is the only reason I actually finished it, because this book felt very unnecessary - especially since it was published after the third book in the series (at least in the Netherlands) and the reader supposedly already knows all the information given in this novella.
The characters didn’t really develop throughout the story, which is a usual characteristic of a novella. Most novellas are plot-driven instead of character-driven, so it didn’t really come as a surprise to me. I am a bit disappointed though. With a marital relationship come more serious responsibilities towards one another, but Millie remained very shy and gave of the idea that she didn’t trust Enzo fully. At this point in the timeline, you’d think that at least their mutual trust is somewhat developed.
!!!SPOILERS FOR BOOK 3 AHEAD!!!
And the plot. It just all felt so unnecessary. We already know from book 3 they got married and have children, so that part of the story did not necessarily have to be written down. What then? The crime? Because that was so rushed that it felt to be ‘filling’ - ‘oh we want a sweet novella, but it’s a thriller series, which means that we need to make it a sweet thriller’ kinda vibe. It wasn’t it for me.
I really try to be positive in my reviews, but I honestly don’t understand the purpose of this book.
