The Watchmaker of Filigree Street
I listened to the audiobook of this book and I must say that I’m a little disappointed.
I’m a big fan of history, historical fiction, fantasy, dark fiction and more, most of which was in the description of this book: sounds like the perfect fit, you’d say! Unfortunately, I didn’t like most of the story.
I thought the plot was pretty boring. A lot of diplomacy and secrecy amongst the characters, but it just kept on going and going until there didn’t seem to be any point of all this. I felt as if most of this plot revolved around details instead of an actual plot - to be honest, I cannot really remember te point/aim of the plot.
What I also cannot remember is the names of the characters. During the audiobook I was kind of confused as well, because the story seemed to switch between perspectives that felt very similar. The two main characters, two men, had different interests, but felt very alike and flat to me, which made me lose interest in the story as well. I did, however, really like the robot octopus! He really was a nice addition to the story and a good connection to the watchmaker.
The dark vibes were definitely present, which is one of the other things I did like. I really felt that the story took place in history - which is definitely not always the case with historical fiction - due to the darkish and diplomatic elements in the plot. The setting really was described well and set a good scene.
Overall, this wasn’t my book and I’m not planning on either rereading this as a physical book or finishing the series. The book was too confusing, at times felt boring and I just couldn’t focus on the plot.
