“Imagine being down so bad you’d master a whole Olympic sport to spend time with someone.”
The Favourites by Layne Fargo felt like Daisy Jones and the Six with a ton more drama and some skates added to it. The result: a captivating story of a few individuals finding their way in a brutal world of ice dancing and love.
When I read the synopsis of The Favourites I couldn’t wait to dive into this book and the world of ice dancing. I love these kind of books where the main character is driven to be the best, no matter the cost, even if that cost is love. I thought it was beautifully written how Kat values ice dancing more than her relationship with Heath, something that leads to a beautiful portrayal of character growth.
The pacing of the book was enjoyable, though unfortunately, I did feel like something was missing a lot of the time. Maybe the time jumps near the end were too big and therefore some parts were skimmed over and stayed too much to the surface without much explanation, which I would have liked to see. Such as the relationship between Heath and Bella, or Kat’s time apart from the sport, alone at home. There were also so many twists in the book that followed each other up way too fast.
I think that for me, the story was too much of a rollercoaster of emotions. However, I did like the documentary style of writing and to learn more about ice dancing
“To the world, they were a scandal. To each other, an obsession.”
