Worthy conclusion

Pieter 14 november 2024
The third book in the Farseer Trilogy is, as the title suggests, a quest.
Fitz is literally summoned to seek out his king. Along the way, Fitz encounters new characters, and naturally, there are plenty of dangers—following the pattern of a classic boys' adventure novel. As a modern reader, you are aware that more books featuring Fitz as the protagonist exist, giving him a degree of plot armor. This predictability establishes a noticeable pattern in the plot. It also diminishes the impact of the hardships Hobb inflicts on her characters.

Through the Skill and Wit bonds, however, Hobb manages to strike a better balance in her POVs. The story is still told from Fitz's first-person perspective but is more balanced thanks to clever elements in the magic system.
Ultimately, Hobb crafts a somewhat predictable yet satisfying epic conclusion to this trilogy. However, there is ample room in her world-building to expand upon, which she executes well.

Despite this book being several hundred pages longer than its predecessor, Hobb maintains better control over the pacing. Just as the story risks dragging, the plot moves forward again. Additionally, Hobb addresses some unexpected themes for a fantasy novel. Gender issues and motherhood are prominent and surprising themes, alongside more standard ones like sacrifice, loyalty, and friendship.

All in all, a worthy conclusion to this trilogy.
