Lezersrecensie
Disappointing
This book disappointed me. I genuinely wanted to find this a good book. Beforehand, I knew that this would be a book with a philosophical angle and I was looking forward to that. I can greatly appreciate a good novel of ideas. And the concepts and themes that Herbert further explores in the second part of the Dune series are genuinely interesting. Religion, power, providence, fate, guilt, and loss. Also, some interesting reflections on biotechnology and the artificial (re)creation of life. The book doesn't contain much action, which I don't mind at all. But I feel that the book is 80% an inner monologue of one of the characters. At what point does a genuinely interesting philosophical thought turn into pompous pretentiousness? One could argue that religions often employ philosophical truths that are not always logical or consistent. And that the style, therefore, fits within the theme of the book. However, it irritated me immensely. Too many unnecessary words in an already not very thick book.
I can't give it more than 2 stars, unfortunately.
