Transcends genres
I wasn't expecting to love this book. I wasn't even sure if I was going to like it. Usually, crime/thriller books are good reads for me, but nothing groundbreaking. This book just hit different. There was something so real about Daunis and her feelings. I couldn't necessarily relate to her, as I'm not Native American or "stuck" between being white or Indigenous, but she was a real person with real feelings, which made it so refreshing. Also the plot wasn't something you see in every thriller, and I find thrillers get repetitive so fast. This book had me crying multiple times throughout, a first for a "thriller" book for me, and by the end I was full on sobbing. I'd definitely recommend it to people, but not as a crime book: there's so much more to it, it transcends genres. It's definitely very heavy though, and while I personally don't mind it and actually liked it here because it's added depth to the book, I get that that's not everyone's cup of tea, so be cautious of that. Only negative thing I'd say is that it was a bit slow at the start, which leads me to give it 4.5 stars instead of the full 5.
