Messy, dramatic, and totally bingeable. A fresh and current YA thriller!

If A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and Gossip Girl had a chaotic little Gen Z sibling, Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart would be it. This book is all about high school drama, an anonymous gossip page, and a main character who is way too comfortable walking the fine line between “spilling the tea” and “completely ruining lives.” And honestly? I had a blast reading it!

First of all, the writing style? Chef’s kiss. It’s fresh, current, and there are references to shows like Wednesday and Stranger Things sprinkled throughout. Sure, that makes the book very much of THIS time, but I didn’t mind—I love when books feel plugged into pop culture. Plus, the way everyone was obsessed with checking Holly’s Instagram page for new gossip took me right back to my own high school days, when Hyves was basically a rumor mill.

Holly herself is such a mood at times (girl turns herself into a blanket burrito when she’s sad, and honestly? Same). But, uh… she also makes some highly questionable choices. Case in point: getting upset about a guy she likes hanging out with another girl and deciding to post a rumor about him—including details that only she would realistically know. Holly, girly, do you want people to figure out it’s you? Because this is how people figure out it’s you.

Now, let’s talk about these characters’ ages because I was confused. I thought they were around 14, but then they’re casually drinking coffee, dropping deep, philosophical one-liners like seasoned college students, and one girl is talking about getting drunk?? Make it make sense. I was definitely not spitting poetic lines about life’s hardships at 14—I was too busy figuring out how to make my eyeliner look even. So yeah, I guess they’re not 14?

While the book was a fun and fast read, I do wish it had been longer. With a bit more build-up, some foreshadowing, and a little extra misdirection, the mystery could have hit harder. The twists felt a bit too straightforward, but the drama kept me hooked.

Final thoughts? Messy, dramatic, and totally bingeable. Just… maybe don’t take social media advice from Holly.
