Marseille 1940. Varian Fry (1907-1967) was a Harvard-educated (closeted homosexual) journalist who ran a rescue network (The Emergency Rescue Committee) in Vichy France helping artists, intellectuals, writers and political dissidents escape from the Nazis and immigrate to the United States. Under profound pressure he succeeded in helping about 2,000 anti- Nazi and Jewish refugees. Among the names on his list (The Flight Portfolio) were: Hannah Arendt, Alma Mahler, Andre Breton, Marc Chagall, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst and Heinrich Mann.
Recently the book has been made into a Netflix series: Transatlantic with Cory Michael Smith as Varian Fry
