Interesting mix of history and mythology
This book mixes Irish Medieval history with Irish mythology. So what you get is marauding vikings, pagan warlords, Christians, fiery Fomorians and magical descendants of the Tuatha the Danann all clamouring for power circa 1000 AD.
The setting is brilliant, as are the two protagonists; two women of mythical descent trying to achieve their goals in a world ruled by men. They're both mothers and I loved how motherhood, the worries and struggles of it, are a major theme throughout.
Unlike so many books of this type the focus is not on battle. This book is more about politics, everyday life, and complex human relationships. It means there's less action, and the pace was slow in places. It was also a little 'neat' for a medieval book, which in my mind should always be a gritty affair.
But those are minor issues. All in all this was a fun and engaging read, well worth it especially if (like me) you're into history and mythology.
