The Martian: Survival, Sarcasm, and Science

ThaFreeze 07 februari 2025
Listening to The Martian as an audiobook was a first for me, and it was a great experience. With my commute every other workday, I finished it in about two weeks, completely engaged in Mark Watney’s struggle for survival on Mars. I had seen the movie years ago and liked it, but I enjoyed the book even more.

Andy Weir’s writing is sharp, mixing science, problem-solving, and humor in a way that keeps the story moving. Watney’s sarcastic optimism makes even the most dire situations entertaining. Wil Wheaton’s narration did an excellent job bringing his personality to life, making the humor and tension feel even more real.

The book and movie are actually quite close, but the book still offers a bit more detail, especially in Watney’s problem-solving process. It gives just enough extra insight to make his survival feel even more rewarding without slowing down the pace.

If you like sci-fi that’s both grounded and entertaining, The Martian is an easy recommendation. Whether you read or listen to it, it’s a great mix of tension, humor, and scientific ingenuity.
