Death, loss, action, violence and the strength of real friendship and loyalty - a worthy conclusion of the series

Tommy Verhaegen 04 april 2025
The conclusion of the series of 7 books. Dramatic, lots of action but also quite morbid.
It all starts in an almost classic way: Harry at the point of leaving Privet Drive. But with a twist - J.K. Rowling is cleaning up all loose ends of the previous 6 books and it starts here. Dudley will prove not so bad after all, Aunt Petunia will be shown in a completely different light much later in the book - only Uncle Vernon remains his usual obnoxious self. Harry will become 17, of age, and all protection on his location and person will fall away, exposing him to Voldemort and the Death Eaters.
After a bit of nostalgia, members of the Order of the Phoenix will help Harry to escape a massive attack of the Death Eaters. Their are betrayed but the plan works, though with casualties. Many more will follow.
Harry will team up wiht Hermione and Ron and start of on an ultimate quest: find and destroy the horcruxes that each contain a part of Voldemorts soul. Only then will it be possible to really kill him.
Needless to say that the quest will be mortally dangerous and full of action - or at least it could be. A large chunk is mostly psychological frustration. And as was already the case before, it does not go as expected. Obviously Rowling wants to create enough variation and avoid repeating herself.
Hogwarts is mentioned frequently but only will play a role at the very end (still over 200 pages) when an epic battle takes place.
In contrast, the biggest battle rages inside Harry Potter, it is not about violence and magic but about accepting ones faith and resisting temptation.
We also get the final word on Snape, his motivation, real loyalty and faith.
Almost all characters are confirmed in their role, very few will have a last-minute change of heart.
Magic is never far off, a few new spells are demonstrated and Rowling gives a special recommendation to Herbology when plants are used in biological warfare of the magical kind.
As was alreay the case in the two previous books, there is not much fun or humour in this book, too many dead are to be moaned for that. Dialogues are sharper as people get tired and their conversation suffers. The author manages perfectly to let the dialogues and thoughs follow closely their physical evolution.
Psychology of the darker variety is broken a few times by joyful events that show the strenght of friendship, not just between Harry, Hermione and Ron, but also Ginny, Neville and Luna. The latter two will come to play a bigger role in this conclusion of the epic.
In the very last pages (after 18 years) we get a glimpse of the later life of the main characters, no surprises there, just answering the curiosity of the readers and leaving with a warm feeling.
