Magical tournaments are held while Voldemort and his Deatheaters rise to power again
Halfway the series of seven books, J.K. Rowling produced a book that connects the cycle of the first three books that were mostly funny and aimed to children with the cycle of the final three books that are mostly dark, bloody and aimed at adults. The latter are also at least twice as thick as the previous.
On the cover we see Harry Potter flying on his broomstick while being attacked by a fire-spitting dragon. This illustrates the first test in the tournament initiated by the Goblet of Fire (from the title).
A new format: the first chapter is this time not about Harry and his family but about Lord Voldemort and his rising to power once again. Only in the next chapter we will turn to Harry and the effect that has on him and his scar, a scar he got from his first encounter with Voldemort who killed Harry's parents at the time.
The previous book with the Dementors and Azkaban left deep scars and that is felt also at Hogwarts.
There is a lot more psychology, personal trauma and drama in this book than in the previous ones.
Ron does not believe Harry and they become enemies. Hermione tries to negociate between them to become friends again but for a long time she will find herself in an uncomfortable middle position.
A magical tournament is held between the champions of 3 schools of wizardry. Champions are chosen by the Goblet of Fire.
While Harry is not eligible for being too young, his name is entered and chosen nonetheless. Only an enemy that wants him dead can have done that. On previous tournaments not all candidates survided.
A rift opens in the magical world. On the one side stands Dumbledore who believes Harry when he says that Voldemort has arisen to power again, on the other Minister Fudge who refuses to believe this and outlaws everyone who does not agree with him. Regrettably some deads are to be mourned.
Grimm, hard, a lot less fun that before but obviously still extremely well written and very hard to put away.
