A battle of magic

Tommy Verhaegen 03 januari 2025
The most gruesome characters in the series are, in my opinion, the Dementors. The tone is set for the rest of the book when Harrt is attacked by 2 Dementors while on holiday, which he is obliged to spend with his uncle Vernon again. The lack of love, even hate, he receives there is made even a lot worse since there is no word from his closest friends Ron and Hermione.
Back at Hogwarts som extra nasty surprises await him. The Ministry of Magic denies all facts about the return of Lord Voldemort thereby indicating that Harry and Dumbledore are lying. When Hagrid and Dumbledore need to go in hiding, Harry is delivered into the non-existing mercy of a foul new teacher of Defence of the Dark Arts, professor Umbridge and her acolyts led by Malfoy junior.
It is impossible to summarize the almost 1000 pages in a couple of lines, suffice it to say that the above indicates that there is not much to laugh about. This is indeed the first of the three very dark books that the series ends with. This does not mean that there is nothing good happening, just that Rowling focuses on bad things happenig to Harry and on longer keeping up the funny and lighthearted writing from the first 3 books.
Another duel with Voldemort almost costs Harry his life (again) and will cause a mysterious death of one of his dearest friends. The fact that Harry, Hagrid and Dumbledore are restored in their dignity and rightful places while Umbridge gets punished severely is completely overshadowed by the death of Sirius.
Dumbledore will explain many things that he kept secret from Harry before. Not all is told but i will clarify some points that were a bit murky.
Lots of tension, action, horror even, not much fun, and as a climax a battle of wizards, not just a duel but two groups that go to war.
If you read the previous books in the series this is a must-read. Rowling is an exquisite writer and the sheer size of the book, althoug almos impractical to handle, is not something you will notice while joining Harry and his friends through all the events in their 5th year at Hogwarts.
