The griffin and the werewolf with Harry Potter agains the Dementor soul-eaters
The drawing on the cover shows Harry with Hermione flying on a griffin through the night sky. This refers to a scene near the end of the book and illustrates a very exciting moment in the story when the book reaches its climax.
The third book in the series is the last one that is really funny and aimed to a younger public (like children). After this it all gets a bit more serious and darker and the target public will be adults.
As in both previous books it starts at Privet Lane in the house of uncle Vernon. Harry tries to blackmail uncle Vernon into signing a note that will give him permission to visit the withcraft village near Hogwarts - and fails miserably.
A new teacher takes a liking to Harry and helps him with something very important: create a Patronus as defense against the horros of the Dementors. He first meets Detmentors, who are horrible guards a the Prison of Azkaban, where wizards who break wizard law are jailed, in the train to Hogwarts. That begins as a real nightmare. Hagrid gets falsely accused of something and ends up in Azkaban.
Sirius Black is the villain who escaped from Azkaban and is after Harry.
This book extends our knowledge that we obtained in the two previous books and puts some new accents, Snape is his own horrible self and will be more and more openly the Nemesis of Harry. Only Ron and Hermione will stay on his side.
Next to his magic wand and owl, Harry will obtain a new magical item that will gain importance throughout the next books: a magical map. This map shows Hogwarts including all its secret passages and in the form of tiny footsteps (moving of course) the name and location of everybody in the school.
Magical creatures play an important role with a new one being introduced: the wherewolf.
A must for who read the first two books in the series, by now it is abudantly clear why the films where made from the books and both books and films were an enormous success.
