A young girl known as "Eater of souls" goes against werewolves and vampires - well, sort of
Wherewolves and vampires have integrated quite well in human society, at least in England. They can be open about their nature, wherewolves in particular have to be carefull round full moon, but big wars between species is something from the past.
But they still have their particular characteristics of course. Alexia Tarabotti is a human girl that sucks the ability of either species to change when she touches them. This is very rare indeed, but Alexia thinks it is mostly embarrassing and annoying. When she accidentally kills a vampire while defending herself against him attacking her, she sets a process in motion that will change not only her life but also that of everyone around her, whether they like it or not.
The book is original (as are the other series from the same author) to say the least. The way Alexia and her views on herself and the world in general, and some wherewolf in particular, are presented is from time to time outright hilarious. Being a bit of an old maid in het mid-twenties and not very attractive with brown (italian heritage) skin and well-endowed bosom, she tries to enjoy life while not begin afraid of anything as long as she carries her brass parasol, which she expertly uses as a deadly weapon.
After the murder she gets involved in the following investigation and her love-hate relationship with Lord Maccon, an alpha-werewolve who is also the head of BUR, the Bureau of Unnatural Relations which answer to the English Queen.
Also tension builds up, the murder investigation unfolds and turns into something much bigger and more important, the book is filled with humorous descriptions and funny conversations.
The psychological aspect is not neglected but is approached from the very special background of this story. It plays in a parallel universe to the London of a few 100 years ago.
Sadly, for men, the author puts a lot a stress and focus on the romantic developments between Alexia and her werewolf. A feminine view that borders on female pornography and where all feelings are exposed in explicit detail.
That makes it a book that is mostly suited for woman although it has everything to become a top-fantasy book that can be appreciated by both sexes.
Old-fashioned with (again that feminine aspect) a lot of attention to clothes and make-up, social esteem and gossip.
